Auditions take place for a new Irish boyband. Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, Stephen Gately, Ronan Keating, Mark Walton & Richie Rock come together and Boyzone are formed.

 

The night after the band are formed, Boyzone make their first Irish TV performance on The Late Late Show. The Group don't have a song prepared so dance to a backing track!

 

Mark & Richie leave the band to be replaced by Mikey Graham

 

The Group tour the countries' pubs in the back of a transit van. That Tour is nicknamed either the Window Sill Tour or the Door Step Tour in relation to how small the stages are!

 

The band release their first single in Ireland, Working My Way Back to You; it features Mikey & Stephen on lead vocals and goes to No. 3 in the charts.

 

Their second single 'Love Me for a Reason' (The Osmonds cover) becomes their first Irish No. 1.

 

Boyzone take part in Smash Hits Show on the Road. Opening doors for them in England, Scotland & Wales; they are voted Best Roadshow Act at the Pollwinners Party and Love Me for a Reason enters the UK Chart at No. 11, climbing to No. 2 within a fortnight.

 

Boyzone continue to take the Irish Charts by storm; achieving 3 further No. 1 singles - Key to My Life, So Good and Father & Son. The same three songs achieve top 5 places in the UK.

 

They win Best New Act at the IRMAs

 

The Group embark on their first UK theatre tour.

 

They release their first album; Said & Done and it becomes No. 1 in both Ireland & the UK where it goes 3x Platinum.

 

The band pick up the Best New Act Award at The Smash Hits Poll Winners Party

 

They make the nomination list for the Best International Breakthrough Act at the Brits.

 

The Boyz appear in a Sugarpuffs Ad with the Honey Monster; it features new song 'What Can You Do.'

 

Replica Boyzone Dolls are released.

 

They win Two IRMAs (Irish Music Awards); Best Irish Group & Single of the year for Key to My Life.

 

Boyzone score their first No. 1 in the UK with 'Words' and follow that shortly after with their second; A Different Beat.

 

They take to the road on their first arena tour.

 

Their second album 'A Different Beat' also achieves No. 1 and 3x Platinum status.

 

The lads go home with 6 Awards at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party - they include Best Single for 'Words', Best Album for 'A Different Beat' & Best Band in the Universe.

 

 

 

 

 

They're nominated in the Best International Group category at the Brit Awards but The Fugees take the prize.

 

They once again walk away with 2 Awards at the IRMAs - Best overall Irish Act & Best Irish Group Album for 'A Different Beat.'

 

Isn't it a Wonder becomes their first single to have its music video filmed outside of Ireland or the UK - The destination being Broken Hill in Australia.

 

Boyzone release Picture of You, which is used as the theme song to Bean: The Movie. Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) also makes a cameo appearance in the music video for the single.

 

They record 'Let the Message Run Free' and perform it as the interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Ireland, which Ronan presents. The song is also later featured on a Pepsi Advert.

 

They release Mystical Experience for the American market but also include it as a b-side on Baby Can I Hold You.

 

The band stage two more sell-out arena tours - 'A Different Beat' in the Spring & 'Something Else' in the Autumn.

 

Boyzone feature on the Children in Need charity single 'Perfect Day' alongside various other artists. They perform their own special version on the BBC's Telethon.

 

Ronan wins an Ivor Novello Songwriting Award for Picture of you.

 

The Boyz guest star in U2's video for The Sweetest Thing.

 

They sing 'Words' with the Gibb brothers on a Bee Gees TV special.

 

All That I Need secures their third UK No. 1, displacing Run DMC & Jason Nevins' 'It's Like That' after a 6 week run at the top.

 

Where We Belong becomes their most successful studio album, spending 3 weeks at No. 1 and a grand total of 55 weeks in the UK charts. It is also the third biggest selling album of 1998 going 5x Platinum.

 

They follow that up with their most successful single; No Matter What, also spending 3 weeks at the top of the U.K charts. It sells 1.1 million copies, eventually becoming the biggest selling boyband song of the 90s. In the 98 end-of-year single charts, No Matter What sits at No. 3.

 

The Group embark on their 'Where We Belong' arena tour - It features a show-stopping Grease Medley.

 

The lads sing 'I Love the Way You Love Me' at the Royal Variety performance.

 

Boyzone win the first ever Record of the Year by a landslide with their massive hit, No Matter What.

 

On a winning streak, the boyz scoop 6 Smash Hits Awards at the annual Poll Winners Party, including Best Song, Best Video - both for No Matter What - & Best Band on Planet Pop.

Shane marries Easther Bennett of girl group, Eternal .

 

Ronan marries model Yvonne Connolly on the Caribbean Isle of Nevis

 

Mikey becomes engaged to girlfriend, Sharon Keane. However, they split up shortly after.

 

Keith marries Lisa Smith in Las Vegas.

Ronan's son, Jack is born.

 

Stephen tells the world he's gay and is in a relationship with Dutch boyband star; Eloy De Jong.

 

After two years of marriage; Shane separates from wife, Easther.

 

Keith's daughter, Mia is born.

 

Ronan's daughter, Marie (Missy) is born.

 

Stephen separates from Eloy.

Keith, Shane, Ronan & Mikey make the difficult decision to finish recording the album they had started with Stephen.

 

They release 'Gave it All Away,' the last single to feature Stephen's vocals. It becomes their ninth No. 1 in their home country and goes to No. 9 in the UK.

 

The band release 'Brother' - named in tribute to Stephen - it goes to No. 1 in both the UK & Ireland (certified platinum) in the week he would have turned 34. It is Boyzone's fifth Number one album in both Ireland and the UK. It stay at the top of the UK chart for three non-consecutive weeks.

 

ITV1 show an hour-long Boyzone tribute to Stephen where the band sing with guest artists and family & friends contribute.

 

They bring out Love is a Hurricane as the second single from Brother.

 

Boyzone embark on the Brother tour; their toughest as a band. It sees them singing tracks from the new album & in place of their usual Medley, they stage a special tribute to Stephen.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Boyzone announce their 20th Anniversary Tour: BZ20, for December.

 

The band release Love Will Save the Day as a single and perform it for the first time on

X Factor Australia.

 

BZ20 becomes their fifth studio album. Released in November; it's the first on their new record label, Warner Music. It reaches No.6 in the UK charts.

 

The lads go on the BZ20 tour, celebrating 20 years since the band's beginnings. It features songs from the new album, as well as favourites from their two decades in the spotlight. Being an integral part of Boyzone, Stephen is celebrated equally with songs featuring his vocals and a fitting tribute from

the boyz.

 

ITV show a programme (hosted by Dani Minogue) celebrating Boyzone's anniversary. The band perform their hits, as well as sharing stories and memories of their time together as a group.

 

Boyzone film a video for their first ever Christmas song; The Hour Before Christmas.

 

They release two more songs from BZ20 - Who We Are & Light Up the Night.

 

They take the BZ20 tour outdoors for their summer shows in the UK. They play Forest Live for

the first time

 

Boyzone release Dublin to Detroit; an album featuring their favourite motown songs.

 

In promotion for that album, the band record videos for 3 of the tracks - Reach Out (I'll be There),

What Becomes of the Broken Hearted & Wherever I Lay My Hat.

 

Boyzone tour in Asia for the first time since they reunited; playing Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok

& Manila. In scenes reminiscent of the 90's, the band receive a rapturous welcome everywhere

they go.

 

The band play summer shows in the UK, adapting their BZ20 setlist to include a Dublin to Detroit

medley. They perform A Different Beat for the first time in 6  years.

Boyzone perform at the Brit Awards.

 

The band release 'When the Going Gets Tough' for Comic Relief, it heads straight to No. 1 in the UK.

 

You Needed Me beats the hype of Geri Halliwell's debut single 'Look at Me' by reaching the No. 1 spot; their sixth to do so in the UK.

 

Boyzone bring out their Greatest Hits compilation; 'By Request.' It's a massive success and becomes their fourth No. 1 album; it initially spends 2 weeks at the top in the UK, slipping down to 2 for two weeks, before jumping back up to 1 and staying there for seven weeks. (9 weeks at No. 1 in total) Overall, By Request spends 57 weeks in the UK charts and is 1999's 2nd Biggest selling album behind Shania Twain's Come On Over. It is certified 6x Platinum.

 

They embark on their Greatest Hits: By Request tour and perform their biggest show to over 35,000 people at the outdoor venue of the RDS in Dublin.

 

The Boyz take part in their own TV special - Just for You on ITV.

 

They sing with Pavarotti in Italy as part of a Warchild benefit concert.

 

Boyzone headline 'Party in the Park' in London's Hyde Park for the Princes' Trust.

 

They release their 16th hit single (17th in Ireland); Everyday I Love You. It achieves No. 1 in Ireland, 3 in the UK.

 

The band walk away with 2 awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards - Best UK & Ireland Act and Best Album for By Request.

 

The boyz start another tour in the UK, this time, their 'Best of' show; featuring their most loved album tracks & B-Sides as well as hit singles.

 

Boyzone close show at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party & Stephen wins Hero of the Year Award.

 

They finish off their 'Best of' tour back home at the Point Depot in Dublin after a record-breaking run of 9 consectutive sell-out shows at the venue.

 

The Band take a break after almost 7 years, 4 No. 1 Albums, 16 consecutive Top 5 singles in the UK (17 Top 3 in Ireland) & 6 No. 1s (8 in Ireland)

Polydor release a compilation of Boyzone's love songs in the form of 'Ballads: The Love Song Collection,' it reaches No. 6 in the UK chart without an ounce of promotion.

 

Keith, Stephen, Mikey & Ronan go and show their support for Shane on TV show, The Games - It marks the first time in four years that the five of them have been together.

 

Shane marries Sheena White in Ireland.

Keith, Stephen, Shane, Ronan & Mikey reunite for a special performance on Children in Need.

 

They announce to their intention to tour the following year.

Devastatingly, two weeks after their final show of the tour at Shepton Mallet, Stephen passes away from an undiagnosed heart condition.

The boyz head out on their first tour in 8 years. 'Back Again... No Matter What' features all their hits, new song 'Can't Stop Thinking About You' and a Jackson Medley. It proves a success, selling out arenas (including the o2 London for the first time) before moving onto outdoor venues for their summer shows. In Dublin, they play the RDS again.

 

Boyzone release their comeback single 'Love You Anyway;' it becomes their 17th consecutive Top 5 hit in the UK, entering the charts at 5. In Ireland it achieves 2 places higher at 3 and is their 18th single to place in the top 3.

 

They bring out a new greatest hit package 'Back Again... No Matter What.' As well as songs featured on By Request, this one includes their last hit before their break; Everyday I Love You, new songs; Love You Anyway, Better & Can't Stop Thinking About You and a Boyzone (live) version of Ronan's Life is a Rollercoaster. In Ireland, it charts at 3 (certified 2x Platinum) and in the UK it charts at No. 4.

 

The band release 'Better' as the second cut from their new Greatest Hits. The accompanying music video has actors playing love interests for the boyz & in a first for any pop band, Stephen is featured with a same-sex partner. The video wins praise from certain sections and later earns them a Stonewall Award.

 

The Group are nominated for a Meteor Ireland Music Award and perform at the event.

 

The boyz take to the road for their 'Better' tour. They perform a Queen Medley which is praised by Brian May himself. It also sees them sing 'Love You Anyway' & 'Better' live to fans for the first time. Their show visits Dublin's new concert venue the o2 which has replaced the old Point Depot.
